Christopher Drew's "The War Chatroom," published in the NYTimes on 8 June 2010, describes how the US military is using social networking tools (primarily closed, military-designed chat rooms and instant messaging software) in conjunction with remote-controlled Drones and Reapers to coordinate intelligence with on-the-ground maneuvers.
This article reminds me of the eighth segment in the Frontline episode "Digital Nation," which focuses on how the US military is changing both its recruiting methods (using video arcades as recruiting tools) and the way that it conducts war.
More than anything, Drew's article and the segment from "Digital Nation" makes me wonder about the unintended consequences of moving warfare online.
Reviewing the "Digital Nation" segment also makes me think that P.W. Singer's Wired for War would be worth a look.
